State/Province: MD

Country: USA

Industry: Non-profit Organization

Company: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern MD, Inc.

High School Diploma, college degree in Business, Marketing, Human Services, Social Work or Psychology

Training/experience required (years, other jobs):

Knowledge of the day-to-day duties in an office (answering phone, typing documents, mail, etc). Knowledge of various office software programs (Word, Excel, Publisher, etc). When working for small organizations it helps to have an idea of what the needs of the program are.

Explain what you do:

Because this particular non-profit is very small, I do a lot of different things and that’s what I like the most about my job! I help Case Managers with the paperwork that they need for their files. I assist the Executive Director in promoting the program and in fundraising. I’m also involved in a program committee that focuses on Public Relations (marketing, networking in the community & recruiting people for the program).

Why should kids choose your career path?:

It is very satisfying to know that you are doing something that has a direct and positive impact on your community.

What would you recommend career wise and how should kids approach/develop their preparation for a working life?:

Approach your career choices with determination AND flexibility. Pursue as many of your interests as you can – that way you won’t ever feel “trapped” in one line of work. Pursue an education in the line of work that you have the most interest in.

Lessons learned: If you started all over what would you do differently?

I don’t know that I would do it differently; I have gained a lot of human service-related work experience while taking college courses that interested me.
