After the failed drop assault on Collegno in 1946, the M2 Mudskipper series' limitations surfaced. Though a solid design, Firefly jump infantry required more adaptable fire support. American designers enhanced the Mudskipper's tactical flexibility with refits, including an M21 Tesla cannon, versatile secondary weapon mounts, reinforced legs, and a single-crew control system. Dubbed M2A5, crews and troopers nicknamed it the 'Linebacker'. Its combat debut in May 1947 saw 200 Linebackers reinforce the front line during the siege of Stuttgart in Operation Valentine.
